about

The Canadian composer Ann Southam, in the liner notes to her 1975/1983 album The Reprieve, The Emerging Ground, states that “…electronic music is almost a dream of sound, reflecting in the human imagination in much the same way dreams do, free as they are from the constraints of the human body.”

In an endeavor to speak to an idea such as this, of a kind of somatic departure through electronic sound, Listening Center presents Exteriorizations - six pieces which are stark yet contemplative, static-seeming yet constantly evolving. The titles are suggestive of the pseudo-sciences of astral projection and remote viewing; metaphors of conscious travel through unknown dimensions; explorative of spaces which are difficult to visualize.

The sound recordings here were improvised on modular and polyphonic synths and mixed down directly through a Fostex console from 1982. At the time of recording, there was only a vague idea of what was to be achieved, and only after later listening could a clearer concept become apparent. It is a case in which to say what pieces are about is to react to them retrospectively; the main goal at the time of recording being to realize moments of consciousness, where intentions can only be intuitive — felt, but not articulated.

These minimal sequence pieces in their formless rhythmic tonality give rise to feelings of a kind of floating expansive isolation, sombre, yet strangely content.

about

Listening Center New York, New York

Listening Center presents a patchwork of imagined pasts and futures, in which the listener can make their way through an undergrowth of dream-like melodies and electronic sound palettes which have the effect of being now reassuring, now unsettling.
